He was the youngest of three children born to Edgar and Mary Oddie. His father was a civil servant and his mother was a schoolteacher. He attended Rochdale Grammar School and then went on to study English at Pembroke College, Cambridge.
Career
After graduating from Cambridge, Oddie began his career as a writer and performer in the comedy troupe The Frost Report.
He then went on to write and perform in the BBC television series The Goodies, which ran from 1970 to 1982. The show was a huge success and made Oddie a household name.
In the late 1980s, Oddie began to focus more on his passion for nature and wildlife.
